Giving Back

Making a difference in Tanzania

Over the fourteen years since the Human Outreach Project began, its goal has remained constant: to give back to the communities whose homes we so cherish visiting. HOP is engaged in various community projects in Tanzania, Nepal, Peru, and the USA.

In 2016, HOP and WWT founder Dean Cardinale sat down with the headmaster of the Makuyuni School in Kilimanjaro to ask what the children needed most. To Dean’s surprise, the greatest need wasn’t for textbooks or for more teachers- it was for food. Many kids were missing school simply because they didn’t have enough to eat, and those who did attend were often unfocused and lethargic from hunger. Since then, hop has provided funds for food, staff, and cooking supplies. As a direct result of the lunch program, attendance at the school has spiked from 700 students attending daily to around 1,200, and the children’s test scores have improved significantly! In July, 2022, the First Annual Charity Climb to Feed the Kids of Kilimanjaro will be held to support the expansion of this important program.

This annual custom climb has been specifically organized with “giving back” in mind. Dr. Art Ulene, who shares our passion for trekking as well as for giving back to the communities which we visit, would like to invite you to join him on a once in a lifetime trek up Mount Kilimanjaro that has the added purpose of helping to fund the Kilimanjaro school lunch program. Join us and be a part of helping to feed Kilimanjaro’s kids!
